We invite anyone who is interested to make use of the results of this survey in their own work, whether that be for use in a peer-reviewed scholarly journal, government reports, institutional use, or even class assignments. The most straightforward way to do so is to use the 1997 summary report, which provides a wealth of data. Please be sure to use the appropriate attribution, if you use this information.

We have also developed a site designed specifically for use in scholarly research, that provides you full access to a broad range of resources, including the raw data. Included is a thorough explanation of the survey methodology, multiple versions of the data sets, and a data dictionary.

If you are interested in using this information in your scholarly work, we invite you to submit a brief application of your interest. We ask for the following information:
  • Your name, title, organizational affiliation, address, phone and email address.

  • A brief synopsis of your intended use of the data, with a statement of research questions or hypotheses, if appropriate.

  • The participants you intend to use (e.g., males, females, certain ages or other characteristics).

  • Variables (or question numbers) that you plan to use, if known. New constructs you plan to create from the variables (e.g. suicide risk from questions x, y and z).

  • A professional reference from an educational institution or government agency, or a citation of your published work.
Please note that as a condition of use of the data sets, we will require that you make a commitment to share your results with other researchers (this can be as simple as indicating in what form you intend to publish your analyses, when and where), and that we may publish the above information on our researcher web site for other researchers to view (with the goal of minimizing any unintended overlap of analyses). Note that the researcher web site is password-protected and available for access only to those who have submitted a similar request.

Your request may be as brief as possible, the data we request is primarily used to ensure the broadest distribution of the analyses and results of this study. To submit a request to use the database, or if you have questions, please contact us at survey@outproud.org.
